Edelweiss

Plant of wild alpine origin, very hardy, with characteristic star-shaped flowers. Similar in layout to poinsettias, the white 'lions mane' petals are actually leaves, with the flowers creating the yellow center. Essentially a low-growing ground cover, it adapts to all environments, although in very warm weather it risks losing its characteristic silvery fuzz on the flower 'petals'. Although normally associated with mountain growth, the key to success is a somewhat alkaline soil with excellent drainage, such as a sandy loam, and plenty of sun. Try growing some to see what all the singing is about! Short-lived perennial, zones 2-7
