Savoy Cabbage Seed

Cabbage can be grown as an early (Spring) or late (Fall) crop, timed to grow and harvest with cool weather. For early crops, start indoors 6 weeks or so before transplanting outside after heavy frosts, for late, start in mid to late May to be transplanted into place 5-6 weeks later, timing the late crops to be harvested before frost. Plant seed 1/4 inch deep, in loose soil to avoid crusting over. Transplant in place 12 to 18 inches apart in rows 2 feet apart. Best germination is at warm soil temperatures of 75-85 F. SPECIAL CAUTION: Untreated cabbage seed is particularly susceptible to failure or 'damping off' if planted in soil that is too cool or wet. Once the seed has germinated, continue growth in cooler temperatures (55-65 F).
